Phelps County Churches Suspend Public Gatherings
Congregations across Phelps County, Nebraska have responded to pleas for social distancing by postponing or cancelling in-person gatherings and events at least through the end of March.
“Our purpose is not to give in to a spirit of fear, but to faithfully follow Jesus’ teaching to ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ by preventing others, especially the most vulnerable among us, from being unnecessarily exposed to COVID-19,” said Pastor Ted Carnahan, vice-president of the Phelps County Ministerial Association (PCMA).
“Our purpose is not to give in to a spirit of fear, but to faithfully follow Jesus’ teaching to ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’"
To the best of the PCMA’s information, all congregations in the county have suspended all gatherings of 10 or more people, including in-person worship, at least through the end of March. Congregants are encouraged to call their individual congregations if they have questions about event scheduling. It remains to be seen whether local churches will be asked to extend social distancing efforts beyond the end of the Month.
Many local churches are also offering online worship as an alternative to gathering in person, either through pre-recorded video or live streaming. The community is encouraged to find ways to continue to participate in church activities throughout the week.
“We use the word ‘church’ in English to refer both to buildings and to the gathered group of people who are the body of Christ,” continued Pastor Carnahan. “While our church buildings may be empty, the Church in Phelps County is very much engaged and active in walking through this crisis.”
